No photograph exists of President Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. One photographer had been given the assignment. He set up his tripod about thirty feet away from the platform. Yet as he peered through his camera, he did not like the angle. So he moved his equipment and set up for another shot. Again he sighted up the subject. Still he saw a shadow across the President’s face. So he once again moved his gear. Just as he had it about fixed, the President finished. The photographer, like others in the audience, had not expected the President’s remarks to be so brief.
